Can an inverter catch fire? [RE-wrenches]

I've been reading a few old Trace manuals, trying to track the source 
of my malaise.  DR ('98), SW('99), PS('99) all make it clear which 
way up you have to put it to comply with UL, but say nothing about 
wall surface.  UX (1997) however also says :

>Do not <in bold> mount the inverter on flammable backings (such as 
>plywood), or place flammable objects or materials on or near the 
>inverter.

I wonder what the difference is?  The inverter characteristics, or 
the mood of the moment?  An SW manual from '96 does not mention 
flammable backings.

hmm.  Perhaps I need to ask Trace.  Their replies are usually pretty 
vacuous though.
