I'm reminded of the only case when I used a cable system instead of
slip rings. I rebuild an old 32V Jacobs and saved the customer some
money by eliminating the sliprings (the original parts were missing
and it also made it easier for me to build the stub tower). I had
heard that he could expect to unplug and untwist the cables only
rarely. The location is on a high flat plateau which experiences our
steady and stable winds with no disturbance. The tail orientation
consistently confirmed very low turbulence. I felt confident.
We were surprised and disappointed to find that the cable twisting
was frequent. It seems that the shift of winds, perhaps some
nearly-daily shift, seemed to always cause rotation in the same
direction, or whatever might explain it.
It would be good now to ask the manufacturers if they have had
complaints from particular locations, using cable system. I'm not
directly involved in this right now, but I pass this on to be of help.
