<< We have been scratching our heads over a particular battery mystery:
It is an installation with eight new (now 4 months old) Surrette 530AH 6V
in 24V config.
Wouldn't a low acid condition prevent the sg readings from reaching 1.270?
How does
one determine electrolyte pH? Can a loss in electrolyte cause these
symptoms? Any other thoughts on this chronic wierdness?
Rob Harlan >>
Rob,
You say that you can get the sg readings all up to 1.270 with an extended
charge and you still end up with all the symptoms you describe? That is
weird.
If you had a few cells that would not get up in SG then it could be
attributed to electrolyte spillage during transport (happens often when
shipped by freight - we adjust for that as soon as we get a delivery of
batteries). But they all can fully charge and reach 1.270, so that is a
stumpah!
I was warned off of the 530AH Surrette's when they first came out by a real
battery veteran, "Dave you can not jam that many plates into the case and
call it a better battery. It will be starved for electrolyte (electrolyte to
plate surface area ratio is important)" - Roy Early. Roy is a great
resource, he comes from a family with multiple generations of deep cycle
battery experience. RAE Storage Battery (860) 828-6007. Give him a call.
Maybe Surrette F***ed up on your batteries and there is nothing you can do.
Can you get the rated amp hours out of them? If you can come close and the
SG spread does not get worse than .40 then call it good. Battery banks can
be mysterious and are not perfect very often.
